“Life means enjoying all the small things we don’t really enjoy; it means getting as much support as we can around us. Life means doing things you’ve never done before. In general, there have been good and bad times in my life. My lowest point was when I was with someone who did not support or appreciate me. After being in a long relationship with him, we broke it off because I found out he didn’t believe everyone was created equal; he came off as a white supremacist. As an Asian woman, I could not get behind the idea of someone who believed that minorities were inferior to Caucasians. For a couple of months, I tried to compromise with him, but I lost a sense of who I was and the morals I stood for. I finally broke up with him after fighting with him for four months. A couple of weeks after we broke up, he tried to manipulate me into trying to get back together with him. It caused a lot of depression during that time. I was confused on what meant more to me – being with him or standing up for who I am. It’s been a year since we broke up.
After 4 months of therapy, I finally accepted who I am as a person. I realized that I need to find somebody who can stand in the same position I’m in and someone who understands the struggles of being a minority. Without my support system of friends, family, and therapist (shout out to Linda), I don’t think I would be where I am at right now.”
