What Is Autism?

Autism (also referred to as autism spectrum disorder or ASD) is a neurological disorder that affects the way a person’s brain and body works. As it is a spectrum disorder, no two people will have the same symptoms and characteristics. In other words, just like other teenagers, not all people with ASD are the same. A person with ASD may have difficulty communicating with other people, making friends or following directions.

Sometimes a person with ASD may have trouble understanding what is going on if they are overwhelmed by lights, noises, movements and smells. Certain things may make them upset, and they may not know how to calm down or tell you what’s bothering them.

Why Some Children Get A Late Autism Diagnosis?

Teens with undiagnosed ADHD are often mistakenly labeled “slow learners” or “trouble-makers”. They can also present as disorganized, forgetful, and frequently make careless mistakes, earning them the label of “lazy” or “unmotivated”.

How Do I Know If My Teen Is Autistic?

Every teen with an autism spectrum disorder will exhibit different symptoms, but some of the most common autism symptoms include:

  • Difficulty interpreting social cues, such as body language, facial expressions and tone of voice
  • Difficulty empathizing and understanding other people’s perspectives
  • Repetitive behaviors or interests (e.g., head banging, arm flapping or tip toeing)
  • Unusual responses to sensory experiences (including lights, sounds and textures)
  • Difficulty regulating emotions (possibly resulting in crying, self-injury, verbal outbursts, and disruptive and physically aggressive behaviors)
  • Inability to make friends or engage in the “give and take” of normal conversation
  • Deficits in verbal communication and understanding language
Intense and persistent preoccupations with certain topics (such as trains or numbers)
  • Rigid need for structure and routine

What Does An Assessment Look Like At The Norooz Clinic Foundation?

All our services are completely confidential and supervised by a clinical supervisor. Your teen will typically meet one-on-one with one of our caring & expert staff to complete a testing battery that is designed based on their needs.

Assessment may require scheduling multiple blocks of time (2-6 hours) depending on the testing, along with a final feedback session where we provide you with the results and our recommendations.

A copy of the report will also be given to you to use, and can be sent to your teen’s school if requested.
